5 Best Cardio Equipment For Your Home Gym

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

What's the best use of space and what is the best possible cardio equipment you can buy for your home gym…well let me help you with these 5 pieces of equipment that every home gym should own.

As I have only a one car garage home gym, I need to be smart with what I purchase, so as my appetite for cardio grew, so did my equipment which all needed to fit neatly into my garage without me falling over it.

Here is my list of the 5 Best Cardio Equipment For Your Home Gym

This list is for those of us that aren’t the biggest fans of cardio, running on treadmills and much rather do a different kind of workout.

1. Fan Bike

A fan bike is my top pick for a very good reason!

Compared to a standard exercise bike, it works off resistance that is generated by air and as you pedal harder, the resistance increases, making the workout harder.

You can also use the two handles to further intensify your workout, burning even more calories.

It can be a great addition to your leg workout routine, as it is so taxing on your leg muscles and will engage your calves, quads and hamstrings, while also involving your triceps, shoulders and biceps if you chose to use the handles while using the fan bike too.

It’s great for interval training such as HIIT, as it allows you to ramp up the intensity easily for a short burst, before letting you control when you reduce the resistance for your resting period.

The Titan Fitness Fan Bike is my personal favorite as its very reasonable prices, compared to other competitors on the market and it’s comfortable, easy to maneuver in and out of place, which is a definite bonus!

2. Sled System

I was never a big fan of the sled and always saw it as a strong man type of workout, but am absolutely in love with my Titan Pro Sled Core Unit now.

Having a small garage gym makes it tricky to use, but I have plenty of space outside the garage to push my sled up and down my driveway, which makes it even more difficult because of the incline my driveway is naturally on.

It’s great for overall muscle building, but also for your cardiovascular health, as it really taxes your system and makes you work hard for every inch you push and pull the sled.

Try to add some weight each round to maximize the workout and really feel your legs as well as your lungs burn.

Our recommendations for sleds are:

I would go with the Pro Sled Core Unit if you can afford it. The unit is perfectly balanced, allows you to push and pull the sled easily and is compact enough to be stored away nicely in a corner of your gym.

3. Boxing Bag

There is not one bodypart that will be spared by you doing a 20-30min boxing bag workout once a week.

It’s an intense workout that will see your upper and lower body, as well as your core put through its paces.

I would recommend first watching a few Youtube videos and learning proper form, technique and the basics, before going at the heavy bag, as you can hurt your wrists very easily if you hit the bag wrong. So be smart about it and watch those videos.

Once you’ve been smart about it and watched those videos, build the heavy bag into your HIIT routine and watch how quickly you will break a sweat.

A great place to start is Titan Fitness for a great quality heavy bag, which you can either hang from your squat rack, or get a dedicated boxing stand.

I have the Power Strike Punching Bag which I would highly recommend. It’s more compact and despite the weight, easy enough to attach to my power rack for when I want to do my boxing workout.

4. Battle Rope

I never thought I would be one of those that will swing a rope around in my gym, but I was converted by a friend of mine who challenged me to a workout which only involved a rope…the rest is history.

Build these into your HIIT routine and trust me…your arms, shoulders, core, legs, everything will be on fire for the entire time you are moving those ropes around.

Technique is important here too, so have a look at a view on Youtube which will explain this to you better than I can.

A great starting point are the Titan Black Poly Dacron Battle Ropes and honestly, they will be the only ones you will ever need.

They come in 30FT, 40FT and 50FT lengths, and 1.5in to 2in thickness.

I have a pair of 30FT @ 1.5in which are currently retailing at $67.97. They are great value for money and are perfect for what I need to do with them.

5. Sandbag

Being an Army vet, I know how tough carrying stuff from point A to point B can be…

Picking up a sandbag a few times off the floor and throwing it over your shoulder a few times and tell me you aren’t feeling the burn in your legs, arms, shoulders, etc.

It’s completely different to any barbell, kettlebell or dumbbell workout you would do, as the sandbag is not rigid and is difficult to grab, rather awkward even. That’s the beauty of this workout though, as anything that is difficult to do, will make you stronger, because you are recruiting muscles in your body that you would generally not use…

This will help you in your standard workout routine which is a brilliant side effect!

My favorites are the Titan ProSandbags which start at 5lb and go to 200lb.

I have the 25-75lb version which are currently going to cost you only $79.97 and cannot recommend these enough.

They are brilliantly built, stitching is very strong and you can confidently throw these around the place, without having to worry about getting sand everywhere!

HIIT Workout example:

5 rounds of each exercise, performed for 40sec each at maximum pace, with 15-20sec rest between exercises and 1 min break between rounds.

  1. Fan Bike

  2. Sled Pull / Push

  3. Boxing bag

  4. Battle rope

  5. Sandbag

Simple right…

NOPE!

It’s going to be tough…but try to enjoy it and soon you will get into it.

Summary

In the past I have been very bad at implementing cardio into my workout plan, because…let's be honest…laziness on my part.

I have put on muscle over the years, but my cardio health has been neglected to a point whereby I was getting out of breath climbing a set of stairs…!

So that eventually put the fear in me enough to get my ass into gear and purchase the most basic exercise bike I could find to start off with and did an hour on that once a week, then twice and then 3-4x a week.

Your cardiovascular system is so important for your overall health, which you should never neglect when you are programming your workout routine.

It reduces the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and other diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. How…

By increasing your cardio health, you allow your body to increase blood flow to your brain, which in return helps you build back up healthy brain cells, by allowing more blood and oxygen to flow to your brain.

Cardio reduces stress and leads to a stronger immune system, as well as better mood and even your sleep will improve over time.

So don’t neglect your cardiovascular system as long as I have and make sure you have these items in your gym too.
